Linear B

Before the Greek language used by Homer existed, two distinct but related scripts are known from archaeological material, Linear A and Linear B. Linear A occurred first, around 1750, on Crete during the Minoan period. It was used throughout the island until about 1450, but not on the mainland. The script has not yet been deciphered. Found on clay tablets, the script so far seems confined to lists of people and products and the tablets probably represent some type of tax receipts, or perhaps census abstracts. It appears that Linear A was not Greek, but rather the native Minoan language.
